Punishment I n most countries people who break the law are either fined or imprisoned, but through the ages there have been many other forms of punishment Flogging Whipping or flogging was once common: mutinous sailors were whipped with a cat-o'-nine- tails or keelhauled (dragged beneath a ship on the end of a rope). Flogging was widely used in the USA. The last state to abolish it was Delaware - but not until 1972! Stoning Even today, some countries punish people by pelting them with stones, usually resulting in the victim's death. Stocks And Pillory Srocks were wooden structures which held the seated victim by the ankles. People threw things at them and ridiculed them - they were literally made a laughing stock. The pillory held victims in place could not use their hands to protect their faces from things thrown at them, and could be blinded or even killed. The last person to be pilloried in England was Peter James Bossy in London on 22 June 1830. A Chinese

As far as we know, time began with the formation of the universe in the instant of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago. Our Sun is about five billion years old. The Earth is estimated to be 4,540,000,000 years old. Earth was created on the evening of Saturday, October 22, 4004BC, according to James Usher the 17th Century Archbishop of Armagh who came to this conclusion by adding up the family histories mentioned in the Bible - such as Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel. 1. Weighty Wonder   Jon Brower Minnoch  (29 September 1941 – 10 September 1983) was an American man who, at his peak weight, was the heaviest human being ever recorded, weighing approximately 1400 lb (634 kg, 100 stone). This figure was only a close estimation, however, because his extreme size, poor health, and lack of mobility prevented use of a scale. He was discharged from the hospital after 16 months on a strict diet of 1,200 calories per day.[5] He weighed 476 lb (215 kg), having lost approximately 924 lb (419 kg) - the largest human weight loss ever documented. However, he was readmitted to the hospital just over a year later in October 1981, after his weight increased to 952 lbs (432 kg). With his underlying condition of edema being incurable and difficult to treat, the decision was made to discontinue treatment, and he died 23 months later on September 10, 1983, aged 41. At the time of his death, he weighed 798 lbs (362 kg) with a 105.3 BMI. 2. Tallest Giant   Rober

The science of sleep is a modern one – in fact most scientific information on sleep has been gained in the last 25 years. 1.  The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses. 2.  It’s impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical supervision. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it. 3.  Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day. 4.  Dreams, once thought to occur only during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, also occur (but to a lesser extent) in non-REM sleep phases. It’s possible there may not be a single moment of our sleep when we are actually dreamless. 5.
